Read, Think, Discuss

I have spent a good deal of my teaching life challenging students to take a critical approach when reading a text or assessing visual communication. I ask students to consider questions like: Who is the intended audience for this piece? What is the writer/artist trying to do with that audience? What rhetorical technique or strategy is the writer/artist using? Over the past few days, my inbox has been choked with propaganda. Now more than ever we need to sharpen our critical thinking skills and consider texts carefully.
